It is the time of year when folks graduate from high school and begin a new chapter by enrolling in college. It is also a time when they lost connection with many of their friends because everyone chooses a different path and in this process, we lose many friends.

I don’t know much about other countries but If I talk about myself, I live in India and I lost many friends. Some left the country for better growth and some chose another field of study. The main thing is, It is a part of life that we have to accept no matter how we feel.

So back to the point!

Those who just got into college, I congratulate you! you’re starting a whole new life where you have to face ups and downs, heartbreaks, etc. It is a phase where you can choose to make the foundation of the success that you’ll get in the future or destroy your life.

In short, the actual game of life starts in college!

But I see many people hold themselves by not socializing with people in the college because they think they can be judged, based on their appearance. So what they do is just focus on their studies. This approach can be self-destructive for you and to help you get out of this situation, Here are 3 pieces of advice that you can follow if you just got into college:

1. Focus On Your Appearance

When I was in my last year of high school, I was very unhealthy. I mean you would scream at me for staying like this. So what I did is I focused on becoming fit. At that time I was doing cardio and some bodyweight exercises and eating healthy foods. So after following this routine for 7–8 months, I lost approx 20 kg (was 97 and became 77 ). This boosted my confidence as I became fat to fit.

If you remember, I told you that some students don’t talk to people because they feel they can be judged based on their appearance. This type of thought comes when you’re not working on yourself. Join a gym if you want to lose weight, build muscle, etc. If you don’t have money to join a gym, do some cardio and bodyweight exercises and focus on your diet.

Talking about fashion, you don’t need a Gucci T-shirt to improve your appearance. If you follow a normal clothing style, it’s enough. If you have some money, only then you can experiment.

The Real thing is your physical appearance. If you have a good physic, you can carry any outfit, I promise!

2. Focus On Building Real World Skills

I was talking to someone who’s very well-educated, has many degrees, and belong to a well-established family. But what I noticed when talking with him is that his communication skill is below par. He wasn’t making eye contact properly and always looked like an underconfident guy.

I asked do you hang out with his friends regularly and he answered how will I hang out regularly if I don’t have any friends. I just go to college, come back home and study. That’s my life. People tell me I’m boring and that’s why nobody wants to hang out with me.

I felt bad after hearing this. This type of thing happens when your parents are very overprotective, and don’t want their son/girl to face any problems.

If you’re in such a situation, then I highly suggest you go out of this situation. Build real-world skills like communication skills, presentation skills, and sales skills. Talk to many people, reach out to business owners/ entrepreneurs through cold email, and attend conferences. There are many ways to improve them.

See degrees matter, but to a certain extent. If you talk to someone who has excelled in their career, always focus on real-world skills.

3. Learn A High-Paying Skill That You Like

Gone are those days when there were only a few career options in our hands. It’s 2023 and there are careers like Web development, UI/UX Design, Content writing, etc exist.

As per Geeksforgeeks, these are the top 10 high-paying skills of 2023:

  1. Content Writing
  2. Programming
  3. Data- Analysis
  4. Digital Marketing
  5. Project Management
  6. Blockchain
  7. Graphic Designing
  8. Web Development
  9. Investment Skills
  10. Sales

As per them, these are the top 10 high-paying skills. But many high-paying skills exist. So research, pick one skill, and start working on it.

But what if you don’t like that skill after trying it for months?

I have a solution for you. Pick One skill, let’s suppose it’s UX Design (which I’m learning currently), and give it at least 3 months to test whether you like it or not. After 3 months, if you like it then stick to it or leave that skill and focus on another one. This is how you find a skill that you like.

After learning that skill, start creating demo projects and show them to the public. Create content around it so that people can see you have some sort of expertise in it. If you do this, I’m sure some people are willing to hire you if your work is good.

In short: Pick a skill > test it out for at least 3 months (if you don’t like it, leave it. pick another one) > start creating demo projects > pitch your services, show it to the people of your field, start creating content > Get offer, clients.

Alright ladies and gentlemen! It’s a wrap for today. I hope you found it useful. At last, my main advice would be to you guys is learn to balance out everything. Don’t just be a toxic productivity guru all the time. Have fun and don’t forget to party hard.
